Is Candida Affecting Your Weight?

candida and weight

“I just don’t understand it,” says Bridgett, a forty-three-year-old real estate agent. “I cut back on calories, I’ve been exercising three to four times a week, and I’ve lost a few pounds, but I can’t seem to lose the bulge around my stomach. Even though I’ve lost weight, I still look terrible in a bathing suit!”

candida and weightGas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort are all too common among people who are trying to lose weight. Like Bridgett, they are partly successful, but the annoying and persistent presence of midsection fat, often accompanied by intense cravings for sugary foods, breads and pasta, and sometimes alcohol, is enough to make them give up and slide back to their old weight – and even add a few more pounds in the process.

If these symptoms have been part of your dieting and weight-loss experience, you have a lot of company. You also may be blaming yourself for not having enough “willpower” to fight off your food cravings. Yet the culprit for many people in this situation is the presence of an overgrowth of yeast, or candida. These opportunistic yeasts cause strong cravings for starchy and sugary foods. An overgrowth of candida, as we discussed in chapter 7, is very common today, given that so many people have a lifestyle that includes eating lots of sugar and ingesting antibiotics, both as medication and in food, as well as the use of birth control pills, cortisone drugs and immunosuppressive drugs.

If you suspect candida may be contributing to your inability to lose weight and inches, review the information and probiotics program we discussed in chapter 7. Bridgett did, and she was pleasantly surprised. “No doctor had ever suggested that a yeast infection could be part of my problem with losing weight and all the bloating,” she says. “After just a few weeks on probiotics and enzymes, I look and feel one hundred percent better. Now I’m shopping for a bathing suit!”
